Post-Reading Activity for the Poem “I Remember, I Remember”

  • Writing Additional Paragraph (new verse)

Student Profile: Intermediate Level

Instruction: Students will examine the poem “I remember, I remember”. Understand the main idea and focus on producing another paragraph for this poem on their own. Their paragraphs need to be similar in terms of rhyme and line patterns (For example: starting with “I remember, I remember” as it is refrain and anaphora, and have 8 lines), as well.

Rationale Behind the Activity: Students will have a chance to examine the language that used in this poem and try to understand the way vocabularies are used (assonance, alliteration, consonance, imagery, metaphor, repetition, etc.). Also, they need to understand the main topic (recalling joyful childhood memories) of this poem first before creating another paragraph.

Possible Drawbacks: Some students might struggle while writing a new paragraph as it needs to be similar to the poem “I remember, I remember”. If they cannot come up with an idea while trying to do this activity, their motivation can decrease.
