Learning Goal for the Listening Unit:To help students identify words and phrases that are used at the airport and while traveling by plane.
Students’ English Proficiency level: Pre-intermediate
Overall focus of the listening unit: Understand the main idea and details Identify words and phrases.
Focus of each listening activity listed in the table below:
Pre-Listening Activity - prepare students for listening, connect to prior knowledge, activate schemata.
While-Listening Activity - comprehend/summarize the events and identify/grasp words, phrases.
Post-Listening Activity - practice words/phrases and create/perform scenarios.
Pre-Listening Activity
Students share their opinions and experiences about traveling. Then, they listen to the video of airport ambiance for two minutes. Next, they try to guess the theme, environment of the video, and this lesson’s topic. Students also share their experiences if they visit this kind of place before. This is a TD (Top-down) activity as students are making predictions about what will happen in the dialogues by listening to the video.
Main objectives of the pre-listening activity:
✔️ The pre-listening prepares students for listening, connect to prior knowledge, activate schemata.
(Help Options: The teacher should encourage students to share their real-life experiences about traveling to activate their background knowledge. Next, the sound from the video will prepare them for other activities as they will make predictions, guess the theme, environment of the video, etc.)
Resource Video: Video -sound- of the airport ambiance.
While-Listening Activity
Students watch the video “At the Airport Conversation” and take notes about the steps that performed in the video. Next, they describe the events that happened in the video with the help of their notes. After this, students match the words/phrases with appropriate options while watching the video for the second time. The first activity -describing events/storyline- aims students’ comprehension and it is a TD (Top-down) activity. However, the second activity -matching- is a BU (Bottom-up) activity as students focus and comprehend linguistic components such as semantic, pragmatic, etc.
Main objectives of the while-listening activity:
✔️ The first while-listening activity is focused on comprehension and summarize the events that happened in the video.
✔️ The second while-listening activity is focused on identifying and grasping words/phrases used at the airport along with traveling by plane.
(Help Options: In this activity, students will work both on their notebooks and handouts. The teacher can pause the video from time to so that students can keep up with the video. Also, observe students in order to provide assistance and support when they need it. When these while-listening activities are completed, the teacher should point out and explain the new vocabularies, expressions, phrases, etc. for better understanding.)
Resource Video: The video “At the Airport Conversation”.
Post-Listening Activity
Students create a short scenario similar to the video “At the Airport Conversation” in groups (max. 4 people) and perform in front of their peers. They must use some of the words and phrases from the video, as well. They also have the option to use a background image or sound/ambiance video while acting their scenarios. This is more like a BU (Bottom-up) activity as students need to go over words/phrases used in the context of an airport as well as traveling by plane while creating scenarios.
Main objectives of the post-listening activity:
✔️ The post-listening activity is focused on practicing words/phrases.
✔️ Creating scenarios with using those words/phrases and perform in the classroom.
(Help Options: The teacher should encourage and help students to perform their scenarios without getting nervous. Also, make sure that students include words and phrases that are used at the airport and while traveling by plane.)
Possible resources:

Implementation Notes:
Activity 1 (Pre-Listening): Create a class discussion and make sure every student shares his/her ideas and experiences about traveling. Also, download the sound of airport ambiance before the lesson -be prepared for internet connection loss and YouTube access problems- just in case. Next, let students share their predictions/comments and create a class discussion once more. Volunteered students can start first.
Activity 2 (While-Listening): Again, downloading the video as a video file can be a good idea to prevent some problems. Next, give students time to think and get prepared before describing the events that happened in the video. Also, before the second while-listening activity, students can quickly skim the questions. After the activity, the teacher can explain correct answers on the board. Also, volunteered students can share their answers along with explanations.
Activity 3 (Post-Listening): The teacher can divide students into groups randomly with a random name picker website. Also, the teacher should walk around the classroom and help students if they struggle while creating scenarios. Finally, volunteered groups can perform their scenarios first.
