Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to

  • Identify the name and purpose of the items that we use daily in order to be clean and healthy.

  • Discuss and give examples about what they use in their daily lives.

Materials:

  • My Ten Friends“ book

  • Background posters via google slides

  • Realia (real toothbrush, scissor, bar of soap, towel, jacket as extra clothe, comb, hat, cotton earbud, nail cutter, shoe)

Warm up:

Capture Attention

Show the background wallpaper slides for the storytelling. Ask, “Can you guess what are we doing in these places?”

Connect to Prior Knowledge and Experiences

Ask students, “What kind of items do you use in your daily life? Are these used for being healthy and clean?”

Noticing

Show the highlighted vocabularies in the book and tell students to write them on their notebooks.

Presentation:

Storytelling + Q & A

Start the storytelling along with using background wallpaper slides. Act as the protagonist of “My Ten Friends” with using realia and check comprehension with asking questions time to time. For example;

  • “Point my toothbrush.”

  • “My toothbrush helps to…”

  • “Soap helps to be clean or dirty?”

  • Are ear-buds helpful to be clean, too?”

  • “What am I doing now?”

  • My final item is… (-students guess-)

TPR (Total Physical Response)

While storytelling as a protagonist, act physically along with realia objects. Say “Everyone!” to hint students to do same actions at the same time. For example;

  • “My friend, Toothbrush, comes to brush my teeth.” (act like brushing teeth)

  • “Then my friend, Comb, comes to keep my hair in place and look nice.” (act like combing hair)

  • “Clothes; to keep me warm.” (act like dressing up)

Practice

Retell (Retrieval)

Retell the story with making mistakes to check student’s comprehension. Wait for students to correct those mistakes. For example;

  • “My friend, Nail cutter, comes to keep my feet warm.” (No, to keep fingernails nice and short)

  • Soap comes to help me to pat me dry” (No, take a bath and keep me clean)

Storyboarding (Retrieval)

Ask students to draw the items that used in the story. They can draw with looking at realia version of the items. Next, ask them to draw bubbles connected to those items and fill in with texts. For example;

  • “My job is to cut hairs!” (connected to a scissor’s speech bubble)

  • “I can cover your body to keep you warm.” (connected to character of clothes’ speech bubble)

Application

Personalized Story/Role-play with Realia (Retrieval)

Ask students to bring real objects that they use in their daily life before the lesson (like hand sanitizer, comb, scissors, cologne, wet tissue, etc.). They will perform role-play of themselves with using objects that they bring from home. Role-play can be based on My Ten Friends book.
