"...to help to activate learners' minds in readiness for connecting the text to their own lives...the initial emphasis was on the people experiencing the texts and not on the language in them...developed activities focusing on the content of the text and helping learners to connect it to their lives. Then, they developed language activities focusing on language features which were salient in the text..." - Tomlinson, B. (2013). Developing materials for language teaching (2nd edition). New York: Bloomsbury Publishing Plc.

Following the description of the text-driven approach, I developed several activities with using a text named "The Influencers" (from Oxford Insight – Intermediate Student Book). The student profile can be senior-year high school students or English preparatory school students at universities -especially students who will major in social sciences/media/advertising-.

1st Activity: Half Part Guessing the Context

Students will read half of the reading text and try to guess its topic. Some questions can be asked to help students. For example;

  • What kind of advertisements do you see in your daily life?

  • What influences you while buying a product?

  • What is the relationship between marketer and stealth marketing?

2nd Activity: Think about your favorite item/object/app/ etc. Then, choose one of them and create/draw an advertisement brochure/billboard.

3rd Activity: Prepare a stealth marketing role-play about your favorite item/object/app/etc. with your partner and perform in the classroom.

4th Activity: Matching Collocations About Advertising

Students will match the collocations about advertising from the text with correct definitions and images. So, they will study and learn these collocations. The teacher can also ask students to create sentences by using these collocations one by one.
