I adapted materials of a unit named "My Daily Routine" from the 5th-grade English course book by the Ministry of National Education (2019)

Adding (Extension): I would add (extend) more examples of activities that are appropriate to daily routines such as:

  • Put on uniform

  • Play with friends

  • Hang the clothes

  • Water the plant

  • Take out the trash

  • Watch TV

  • Feed the cat/dog

Even if they cannot learn all of them at the same time, they can recognize these activities whenever they saw or heard them. Also, they can use these while talking about their own daily routines later on in the lesson.

Deleting (Abridging): I would delete the “telling the time” and “write the time” sections because it might be too much for students to learn all at once. We can just focus on learning the routine first and then spare a period for the time topic.

Adding (Extension): I would add (extend) a few more questions and tell students to ask & answer these questions to each other (pair-work). Questions would be like:

  • “Do you do your homework before or after dinner?”,

  • “Do you do exercises in the morning?”,

  • “Who do you have dinner with?”,

  • “Do you watch television at night?”,

  • “Do you make your bed?”,

  • “How do you get to school?”,

etc.

Adding (Expanding): I think students can role-play this dialogue out loud rather than just filling out the blanks and we can focus on pronunciations of vocabularies.

Deleting (Abridging): I did not understand the point of counting numbers in the middle of daily routines. As I also abridge the activities about time, I would do the same for this one, as well.

OR

Reordering: If students feel bored or sleepy after completing an activity, this activity can be done as a brain-break (energizer) activity next.
