Presentation Stage

Warm-up: Show a combination of posters from different movies and ask questions in the present perfect tense:

  • “What movie have you seen recently?”

  • “Have you ever watched that movie multiple times?”

  • “How long have you known the protagonist actor/actress?”

  • “How long have you been a fan of him/her?”

Share your own answer, as well (e.g. “I’ve seen the “Dr. Strange”. Yes, I have. I know the actor since 2014. For 8 years.”).

Next, tell students to carefully watch and listen to the video that contains different clips. After watching the video, ask students whether they noticed something or not. Write the answers -maybe quotes from the video- regarding the present perfect tense on the board.

Next, show new sentences on the smartboard. Tell them to guess this grammar rule and how & why we might use it.

(E.g.

  • “I have never seen a sci-fi movie.”

  • “He has not come to the school yet.”

  • “She has learned a new language.”

  • “We have studied for our exam.”

  • “They haven’t practiced.”

  • “Has she finished the homework?”

etc.)

After students share their answers, briefly explain why and how we use the present perfect tense.

Practice Stage

Story Building Game With Cards: This game is similar to “Drill Chain”. Firstly, print story cards from multiple resources before the lesson (e.g. 1, 2). Every student will choose a card without looking at the other side of it. Then, they will create a story by adding sentences that related to chosen cards one by one. They must create a sentence using the present perfect tense, as well. Every student can share 2 or 3 sentences in each turn. The sentences must have a connection between them. When a student struggles, help him/her by giving tips/hints. Additionally, it might be advantageous to record, type, or write the created story in order to save and go over it later on.

Production Stage

Open the random wheel of open-ended present perfect questions and let students spin and answer these questions.

Next, tell students to create comics on Pixton. The comic should contain the present perfect tense sentences in the speech bubbles. When they complete their work, tell them to upload it on their personal blog/current LMS. They should also look at each other’s comics and leave a comment/feedback.
