Transforming Visual Elements that used for Decorative Purposes in EFL Course Books

There are images that used only for decorative purposes in the EFL course books. With using what I learned from the Course Book Evaluation class, I prepared the following activities/questions.

As you can see, there are no activities related to the people at the end of this course book page. Therefore, I would ask the questions below:

• What can you see in this photo?

• Where are they? What are they doing?

• If you can give a title to this photo, what would it be? What might they be thinking?

• Can you try to guess their nationalities?

• Do you have a photo similar to this?

(Cambridge English Empower Upper Intermediate Student’s Book)

• If this photo was from a movie scene, what would the accompanying music be like?

• Say positive and negative things about this photo and let your partner guess which ones are your real opinions.

• Can you see yourself as these people in 20 years?

• Do you know anyone who looks like these people?

• How does this photo make you feel? (As they are all focused on their mobile technology)

Bonus:

Topic: Who am I?

• What are these people doing? What can you see? Guess their jobs.

• What are they talking about.?

• Role-play these people with your partner in front of the class.

• How do you introduce yourself? Do you prefer to shake hands?

• Assignment: Prepare a poster with your photos that introduce yourself at home.

• Assignment: Create a graphic storyboard about this topic on the Pixton website.
